Random shootings seem to be a part of life in the modern world. It is hard to tell where or when these tragic events may strike. No community in the country seems immune to these acts of violence; even military bases have become a target.  If you are ever involved in one of these horrifying situations, the best defense is to look for the nearest escape route and flee to safety immediately.

 

If there is no immediate exit, be sure to barricade yourself in an area where the shooter would find it difficult to access. If confrontation is unavoidable, you MUST fight back with whatever means possible. Use improvised weapons, throw projectiles to disrupt the shooter's aim, and if you are close enough, try to maintain control of the shooter's weapon and disable him or her using deadly force.

 

Although this sounds like a hopeless situation, as a modern day warrior you simply can never give up. Many of the victims in these type of shootings allow the attacker to place a gun right up against their head without reacting; frozen in fear. If someone with a gun gets that close, your action will be faster than their reaction, so you have nothing to lose then to fight for your life.If you are going to be killed regardless, go out fighting!

 

Start adding gun defense and takeaways to your self defense drills. You never know when they might come in handy!

 

TRAINING TIPS

 

In view of the above advice, I highly recommend you start adding more street reality fighting to your practice. No one loves kata more than me, but you MUST supplement your daily form practice with practical techniques to defend against the reality of modern day combat. I have started teaching practial street fighting private lessons, and will soon be opening a private training dojo here in Port Angeles, WA.
