Using Weapons in Self Defense

Using Weapons in Self Defense

Using Weapons in Self Defense

Violent crime is becoming more commonplace in modern society. The traditional method of training in the martial arts to fight one unarmed opponent is no longer based in reality. Therefore, modifying your training to combat an armed attacker, multiple assailants, and even active shooting situations is highly recommended. Real street fighting means surviving at any cost.

Of course, you may choose to carry a firearm if it is legal in your state. However, this is a very big responsiblity and you need to adjust your lifestyle accordingly. As a former secutiry professional, I can honestly state that constantly being armed with a handgun is challenging and not all that comfortable. If you do decide to go this route, be sure to acquire practical shooting skills from a reputable instructor before venturing forth on the mean streets. You also must remember, that no good can ever come once you decide to use a gun in a deadly force situation. It may be necessary to protect your life, but the legal and civil ramifications may be overwhelming so be prepared!

There are many alternatives to firearms however. I always carry a tactical folding knife as a primary self defense and utility instrument. Once again, using a knife takes considerable training and also leaves you vulnerable to legal ramifications. Other impact weapons are easy to carry and much safer, yet still effective if you want to increase your chances in a street survival situation.

Tactical pens, flashlights, kubotans, and a multitude of legal alternatives are becoming very popular. There is even a new trendy weapon - a weighted paracord "Monkey Fist" . It is an intricate knot wrapped around a small steel ball.  Whatever you decide to utilize, be sure to practice constantly with your weapon of choice and use only the amount of reasonable force necessary to defend yourself.

Private Training

I experimented with SKYPE priivate lessons last month with several students, and must say I was pleasantly surprised at how effectively they worked. It is really just like being there in person. It really allowed me to provide live feedback to home study students and get them to take their training to the next level. I am also now using it as an alternative to video testing. Students can also learn on modern street fighting techniques and weapons, including knife skills, during private lessons.
